Indonesia Awaits Yudhoyono Cabinet


President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will officially name his new cabinet today. Many of the names have leaked out over the past few days. Analysts say it's a mixed-bag of solid technocrats and political appointees without the track record to push much-needed reforms. Here's a rundown of the likely appointments:

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs

Hatta Rajasa's appointment to this position has drawn some criticism from analysts who say that as transport minister in 2007 he showed protectionist tendencies and favored local over foreign investors. In one case, he blamed foreign shipping companies for charging too much rather than try to reduce a bevy of unpopular levies at ports. He was removed from his post after a series of deadly air disasters. But Mr. Rajasa, whose last job was as state secretary, is a close aide to Mr. Yudhoyono and was crucial in bringing his party, the Islam-based National Mandate Party, behind Mr. Yudhoyono's presidential bid.

Finance Minister

Sri Mulyani Indrawati's reappointment to this job is likely to cheer markets. The former International Monetary Fund senior executive has run a tight economic shop that has seen public debt fall to 30% of GDP from 60% when she took up her position four years ago. She's also run a war on corruption, starting to clean up the tax and customs department.
